A Life of Service, Love & Purpose

David James Bloom, 55, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, David lived his life with unwavering integrity, generosity, and a quiet strength that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.

🇺🇸 Service to Country

Born on March 12, 1969, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, David was the second of four children born to Robert and Margaret Bloom.

From his earliest years, those who knew David recognized something rare — a young man of uncommon character, driven by purpose and an instinct to serve others before himself.

After graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1987, David answered his country's call.

He spent the next twelve years serving with distinction in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the elite 82nd Airborne Division.

His deployments included Operation Desert Storm, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.

David proudly served his country during Operation Desert Storm.

Building Communities

When David returned to civilian life in 1999, he brought those same qualities of leadership, discipline, and commitment to a distinguished career in construction project management.

Over the decades that followed, his work helped shape communities throughout Virginia — schools where children learned, hospitals where lives were saved, and gathering places where neighbors came together.

His colleagues remembered a leader who set the standard, and then helped everyone around him rise to meet it.

❤️ A Love Story

In the summer of 1994, David married Linda Marie Thompson at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Richmond.

Their thirty-year marriage was not simply enduring — it was a living testament to what love looks like when it is chosen every day through every season of life.

Together they built a life centered around family, faith, laughter, and countless memories.

"The measure of a marriage is not found in years alone, but in the love shared through every moment."

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Was Everything

Family memories at Lake Anna — where David created some of his happiest moments.

As a father, David was fully present. He never missed a soccer game, a school play, or a graduation.

He taught his children to fish at Lake Anna, change a tire on a cold morning, and look people in the eye when they speak to you.

He coached them not with lectures, but with example.

Teaching life's lessons one fishing trip at a time.

❤️ The Joy of Grandchildren

And then came grandchildren — and something in David that had always been large grew even larger.

He built LEGO castles that took up entire living room floors. He read bedtime stories with full dramatic effect. He slipped extra cookies across the kitchen counter with a conspiratorial wink, making every child feel like the most important person in the room.

Creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

🤝 A Life of Giving Back

David understood that a life well lived extends beyond the front door.

Through Habitat for Humanity, he put his skills where his heart was — building homes and, in doing so, building dignity for families in need.

He believed everyone deserved a helping hand and quietly gave his time, talent, and compassion to those around him.

Honoring veterans and continuing his lifelong commitment to service.

Those Who Carry Him Forward

David is survived by:

  • His beloved wife of 30 years, Linda Marie Bloom
  • His son, Michael David Bloom, and daughter-in-law Sarah
  • His daughter, Emily Rose Bloom-Carter, and son-in-law James
  • His grandchildren — Olivia, Ethan, and Charlotte
  • His brother and sisters, extended family, colleagues, and countless friends whose lives are richer because they knew him

David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Bloom, and by Max — his faithful German Shepherd and unofficial therapy dog for many years.
